Stitching Memory (Broward / Documentary / 12 minutes)
Stitching Memory is an intimate documentary portrait of Israeli American artist Yochi Y. Avin, whose deeply personal work transforms family photographs, handwritten letters, translucent silk, and thread into meditations on memory, belonging, loss, and healing.
Raised on an Israeli kibbutz and separated from much of her family during childhood, Yochi learned at an early age what it meant to live with distance and long for connection. Decades later, she returns to fragments of her family history through her art, layering archival photographs with delicate fabric, embroidered words, and gold thread.
Yochi does not attempt to reconstruct the past exactly as it happened. Instead, she honors what remains: a gesture, a face, a letter, an absence, or an emotion that continues to live beyond the original moment. In her hands, stitching becomes a language. Each sewn line retraces a relationship, while every repaired photograph acknowledges that memory may be fragile, incomplete, and still worthy of preservation.
Through personal reflections, archival materials, and immersive observations of her creative process, the film reveals how art allows Yochi to hold what time and separation have placed beyond her reach.
At its heart, Stitching Memory is a meditation on family, resilience, and the human need to remain connected to those who shaped us. The film invites viewers to consider their own photographs not simply as records of the past, but as vessels carrying identity, longing, and love across generations. Key Cast: Yochi Y. Avin
